Johnson & Johnson’s Center for Device Innovation at the Texas Medical Center is currently recruiting for one Manager, Technology Development based in our Houston, TX hub.
The vision of J&J’s new Center for Device Innovation at the Texas Medical Center (CDI @ TMC) is to significantly impact healthcare by accelerating the development of breakthrough medical technologies. As a collaboration between Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies, Johnson & Johnson Innovation, and the Texas Medical Center, CDI @ TMC brings together the unique strengths and resources across these great enterprises to create a novel approach for medical device innovation. The team, resources, and access to expertise through CDI enables needs-based ideation, rapid technology prototyping, and pre-clinical / clinical testing with shorter timelines and capital efficiency.
There are 3 primary modes of engagement to accelerate medical device development: 1) internal technologies based on concepts generated at CDI or one of J&J’s family of companies, 2) external technologies based on IP transferred from universities, hospitals, and inventors, and 3) external companies which take residence at CDI. The team at CDI has a proven track record of successful medical devices and has flexibility to engage in new opportunities across a spectrum of different services and needs, including: independent development, collaborative co-development, machining / prototyping, design for manufacturing, and strategic advising.
Summary of Position:
CDI is currently recruiting for a new Manager of Technology Development to be based in Houston, TX. This position will be the primary manager of the engineering team responsible for developing new technologies at CDI. The focus of the team is to de-risk technologies in the Feasibility stage and demonstrate proof-of-concept for transition into J&J’s product pipeline. This position will be responsible for managing all parts of the development process, including: direct reporting of the engineers, project management and resource allocation, providing technical expertise and guidance, and defining functional requirements for the Feasibility stage. In parallel with management responsibilities, this position may also serve as a technical team leader for projects as needed, including hands-on design work of prototyping and testing. Additional responsibilities include prioritization and planning for the machine shop resources, and working closely with both internal and external stakeholders and experts to define success criteria and milestones for projects.
•Manage the core engineering team to drive development of early-stage technologies, execute on project plans, and achieve key milestones and goals
•Provide guidance, direction, reviews, and professional development of direct reports
•Serve as project manager to oversee plans, budgets, work scope, timelines, and resourcing on individual projects as well as portfolio allocation across the projects
•Conduct project reviews for design input requirements and specifications, assessment of new concepts, evaluation of prototypes and test methodologies
•Define appropriate process and structure to achieve functional requirements of Feasibility stage
•Utilize technical expertise and insights for problem-solving on projects
•Lead projects with hands-on technical development as needed
•Plan and prioritize machine shop resources for prototyping
•Engage with stakeholders to ensure project goals are aligned with business and customer expectations
•Invent and patent new ideas and designs, and manage pipeline of disclosures and patent rewards
•Provide back-up support for facilities and operational issues as needed.
•A minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required; Mechanical, Electrical, or Biomedical Engineering is preferred, and an advanced degree (MS or PhD) is strongly preferred
•Minimum 10 years of relevant design and development work experience is required, with at least 5 years of management experience with direct reporting of engineering teams.
•Minimum 5 years of experience in the medical device field is strongly preferred.
•Knowledge of general design engineering and DFMA principles, component manufacturing processes, tooling methodologies and material properties is required
•Project planning and management skills are required, with a demonstrated ability to organize work independently and prioritize multiple tasks and activities.
•Experience throughout the product development lifecycle from concept to commercialization is required, and demonstrated success with front-end innovation is strongly preferred.
•Demonstrated technical leadership capabilities with experience working in a collaborative, multi-functional team environment is strongly preferred.
•Demonstrated ability for creative problem-solving, inventing, and ideation is strongly preferred
•Effective interpersonal skills & the ability to partner with internal & external customers is required.
•Experience with CAD/CAM and design analysis software, design of experiments (DOE), mechanical testing, and geometric tolerances (GD&T) is strongly preferred.
•Experience working with vendors and suppliers is strongly preferred.
•Strong analytical skills and synthesis of data across a range of different disciplines / fields is preferred.
•Effective oral and written communication skills are required, with experience in technical writing of protocols / procedures, test results, project reports and updates.
•Experience with intellectual property is strongly preferred, including patent disclosures, landscaping, and analysis of prior art
•Ability to deal with a high degree of ambiguity or uncertainty in a dynamic environment, and adapting to changing conditions is strongly preferred
•This role may require some travel up to 10% (domestic and/or international)
