Industrial Controls Rotating Equipment Solution Engineer

Position Overview:

The Solution Engineer is responsible for the design of diverse complex control systems for rotating equipment, specializing in the Dresser-Rand family and aero-derivative gas turbines. The design includes auxiliary systems like seal gas and lubrication, process interface, vibration monitoring, fire and gas systems, safety systems, definition of instrumentation, process knowledge, etc. The candidate should have vast experience and expertise on rotating equipment, process control, knowledgeable about reciprocating and centrifugal compressors, steam and gas turbines, expanders, aero-derivative turbines, etc. Comprehensive understanding of the process where the rotating equipment is used is required – upstream, midstream, downstream, turbo-generation, etc.

Part of this job is to make sure that the systems and processes operate effectively, efficiently and safely. A thorough understanding of the organization as the role includes multidisciplinary activities, working closely with colleagues around the world and across different functions including Software Engineers, Hardware Engineers, Drafting, Operations, Manufacturing, Test, Procurement, Bid Management, Sales and other Engineering teams. The Solution Engineer role is the main technical interface with the customer, supported by the Project Manager on the commercial and execution side.

Responsibilities:

  • Innovation according to market and technological trends for rotating equipment controls solutions to retrofit in-service fleet for centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, industrial steam turbines, industrial gas turbines and/or industrial aero-derivative turbines (SGT-A05, SGT-A35, SGT-A45 and SGT-A65).

  • Design of rotating equipment control system solutions for new and existing equipment (modifications/upgrades) – greenfield and brownfield.

  • Design and/or understanding of control algorithms for specialized control system functions, like fuel control, engine control system and anti-surge control.

  • Design of control strategy and rotating equipment functionality, based on P&IDs (Process and Instrumentation Diagrams), Instrument list and customer process requirements, along with rotating equipment manufacturing design specifications.

  • Creation of documents which include but are not limited to quality documents, alarm and shutdown matrix, cause and effect, control narrative, loop diagrams, logic flow diagrams, factory and site acceptance tests, installation and commissioning guide and other contract specific documents.

  • Support and collaboration for the generation of hardware documents like face layout, bill of materials, I/O list, schematic diagrams, terminal block layout, etc. Participation in the document review phase.

  • Responsible for participating in the following meetings: handover from marketing, customer kickoff and scheduled meetings, hardware design review, handover to manufacturing, software design review, handover to test, in-test design review, final design review and FAT related meetings.

  • Software development and testing, or collaboration on the software development process.

  • Collaboration with the research and development team.

  • Support to the GTM (go to market) and Bid Management teams in finding the best solution for the customer needs.

  • Achieve high quality standards for DR and AGT control system solutions.

  • Less than 30% travel/year expected.

  • 10% availability outside regular work hours, to support customer phone or web meetings, internal or factory acceptance tests.

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, instrumentation and controls engineering or similar. In lieu of degree, 10+ years of relevant experience.

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience working as an Engineer

  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization.

  • Experience with aero-derivative turbines including SGT-A05, SGT-A35, SGT-A45 and/or SGT-A65, Dresser-Rand rotating equipment like

  • Familiar with DR and/or AGT packages and standards.

  • 5 years or more experience working in an engineering environment for turbomachinery control systems.

  • 5 years or more experience designing different controls and process instrumentation systems for rotating equipment.

  • Ability to understand P&IDs, instrument datasheets and electrical schematics.

  • Vast process knowledge of industrial control systems for aero-derivative turbines.

  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols including OPC, Modbus, Ethernet, Profibus, etc.

  • Familiar with generator sets.

  • Knowledge of legacy Rolls-Royce industrial aero-derivative equipment.

  • Knowledge of auxiliary systems like lube oil and seal gas.

  • Familiar with load sharing control strategy.

  • Panel design, cable tray, conduit layouts, junction box design, cable sizing and routing.

  • Familiar with the NEC, NFPA, ISA, IEC, CSA, UL, ATEX, NEMA and other industry relevant standards and directives.

  • Familiar with hazardous area classification and safety integrity levels

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • PLC and HMI knowledge.

  • Rockwell Control Logix, GE Rx3i, Triconex, Siemens S7-400 family.

  • Familiar with Dresser-Rand rotating equipment.

  • Familiar with motor driven reciprocating compressors.

  • Familiar with VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) equipment.

  • Familiar with fire and gas systems.

  • Familiar with motor driven centrifugal compressors and steam, gas turbines.

  • Familiar with Bently Nevada, Detronics F&G, Woodward Micronet and CCC.

  • For generator sets, steam turbine governor with non-extraction, single or dual extraction.

  • Balance of Plant and Motor Control Center

  • Battery banks / UPS Systems.

  • SIL design engineering, SIL study development, SIL calculations.

Experience with one or more of the following equipment/applications, process and control systems:

  • Reciprocating compressors used in applications including upstream production (LNG, gas lift, boil-off / residue gas, export, natural gas gathering, natural gas liquids, shale, coal bed methane, enhanced oil recovery – CO2 for natural gas injection), midstream (gas transmission and storage, natural gas gathering, gas injection, FPSO and FLNG, fuel gas, natural gas processing – inlet, sales, refrigeration), downstream processing (petrochemical plant gas-to-liquids, hydrogen production, various other refining applications, cool gas, methanol and ethylene, ammonia, nitric acid, and urea), and power generation (fuel gas).

  • Compressor solutions can be standardized or tailored to your needs in a variety of applications – such as on- or offshore oil and gas production, natural gas transmission and distribution, air separation, chemicals, petrochemicals, and refining. Derived from our integrally geared compressor technology radial expansion turbines help recover energy from hot process gas streams and can be used to drive a compressor or generator. Centrifugal compressors comprise single-shaft, pipeline and axial.

  • Aero-Derivative Turbines, originally developed for use in aviation, aeroderivative gas turbines are flexible, compact, and lightweight designs that are ideally suited for power generation and mechanical drives in the oil and gas industry. Their high efficiency and fast start capabilities mean that aeroderivative gas turbines also perform well in decentralized power generation applications.

  • Expanders, integrally geared radial expanders are applied where energy can be recovered from medium to high temperature off-gas or process gas streams from chemical and other industrial processes. Radial expanders can be integrated with the driven equipment and auxiliaries into easy to handle packages for ease of on-site installation and commissioning. Packages would normally include the compressor, its driver(s), process gas coolers, lube oil system, process piping, and other auxiliaries.

  • Steam Turbines, Dresser-Rand and other legacy brands, typical applications are refineries, petrochemical plants, food processing, process pump drives, lube oil pump drives, process waste heat recovery, etc.
