Required Education:

Bachelors’ degree in maritime-related discipline or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Experience:

Two years post-licensure experience as a Ship’s Master, operating unlimited tonnage vessels.

Preferred Education:


Preferred Experience:

Five years post-licensure industry experience. Experience at a US Maritime Academy operating training vessels or experience at a maritime training school.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

USCG Masters Unlimited Oceans License, GMDSS STCW endorsements; Master, Medical PIC, VSO TWIC. USCG-issued Medical certificate.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:


Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent organizational, managerial, and supervisory skills. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent computer skills. Knowledge of ABS NS5 PM system. Good communication skills. Ability to work with and mentor college-age cadets.

Job Responsibilities

70%: Vessel Operations:

Navigates the vessel safely and skillfully. Ensures the overall safety of the vessel and all persons on board. Ensures readiness and maintenance of vessels. Works with MARAD to maintain the ship to USCG requirements. Responsible for discipline of persons that are direct reports. Coordinates with all shore side personnel and port officials. Conducts maritime training for students during semester and on summer training cruises.

15%: Vessel Inspections:

Oversees completion of tests, drills and inspection of daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly items as per USCG and SMS. Makes application for inspection with USCG. Ensures that the vessels meet inspection criteria and performs the inspection with the USCG.

10%: Training and Crew Certifications:

Schedules and performs emergency drills as required by USCG. Maintains 100 % of USCG required crew up to date with First Aid, CPR, and drug testing. Revises and updates (as needed) the Emergency Procedures, Safety Meetings, and Operations Manuals. Maintains medical emergency procedures, Security Plan, and Hurricane Plan .

5%: Other Duties

Performs other duties as assigned.

Other Requirements or Other Factors

USCG regulated position. Must pass USCG/DOT drug test prior to employment and participate in the University’s random drug testing plan. Must participate in University actions and events as needed. Be able to operate the Training Ship with during cruises with the highest level of safety. Operational knowledge of Safety Management Systems.
