JOB SUMMARY

HIRING IMMEDIATELY

The Histocompatibility Specialist 1 performs an advanced variety of clinical Laboratory tests to determine donor/recipient compatibility. Work requires professional level of knowledge in order to gather and interpret data. Communicates with Transplant Programs and Donor Banks to remain current on donor and patient status. Serves as resource to other staff in the Laboratory areas.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE

Performs Histocompatibility testing including HLA (human leukocyte antigen) tissue typing on solid organ recipients, bone-marrow recipients and potential donors.

Performs antibody screening to determine presence of antibodies and performs crossmatches to predict compatibility between recipients and donors.

Analyzes and records test results accurately and prepares test reports; notifies appropriate medical staff when necessary.

Cleans and performs routine maintenance and calibration of instruments. Performs quality control on reagents, equipment and techniques.

Prepares blood collection kits and mails to patients and potential donors. Prepares cells for freezing and serum storage on patients and donors.

Remains knowledgeable of current trends in Histocompatibility testing including HLA typing, crossmatching, and lymphocyte antibody screens and transplant protocol.

Teaches new employees, pathology residents, and medical technology students, as needed.

May be responsible for one or more of the following duties; maintenance of the quality control program in the Transplant Immunology Lab, checking the database for accuracy of results entered, principal instructor for the teaching program, assuming the responsibility of lead technologist in one or more of the technical areas of the Laboratory, assists the Senior Clinical Histocompatibility Specialists in making the daily rotation schedule and the on-call schedule for the Laboratory, assists the Laboratory Manager with the tray maps and the make-up of the preliminary crossmatch trays, acts as Safety Coordinator for the Laboratory.

  • LOCATION - BUMC Downtown Dallas TX Transplant Immunology Laboratory

  • SHIFT - Day Shift 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

  • EDUCATION - Bachelor's or 4 years of work experience above the minimum qualification

  • EXPERIENCE - 2 Years of Experience

  • PREFERRED EXPERIENCE - Any previous experience in Histocompatibility will consider Certified Med Tech or BS in Biology - On the job training

  • CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION -

ASCP-Histotechnician (ASCP-HT), ASCP-Histotechnologist (ASCP-HTL), Cert Histocompatibility Spec (CHS-ABHI), Cert Histocompatibility Techno (CHT-ABHI), Histocompatibility Spec Cert (HSC), Histotechnician (HT): Must have a Histocompatibility Technologist Certification or a Histocompatibility Specialist Certification.
