This full-time position requires someone with building sciences and energy analysis background supported by a genuine passion for sustainable high-performance building design. The job entails the preparation of whole-building dynamic thermal and energy building simulation models for various building types and scales, including advanced mechanical systems evaluations, architectural response to enhancing daylighting, lighting control systems and detailed thermal and moisture response of building façade components. It also includes detailed engineering analysis for the purpose of minimizing energy consumption and related greenhouse gas emissions related to a building’s architectural design, construction, and operation. The work performed includes comfort studies, life cycle costs analysis, energy simulation, daylight simulations, solar shading analysis, renewable energy evaluation, and computational fluid dynamic studies. The outcome of this work is analysis-based recommendations that inform design and operational decisions made by architects, engineers, contactors and operators.

  • Support Director of Integrative Energy Engineering to expand and further integrate design performance, building energy modeling and building operation modeling for all projects across the firm. This includes informing design decisions by predicting a building’s performance with respect to energy efficiency, passive and active design strategies, building massing, daylight availability, glare control, shading analysis, thermal comfort, natural ventilation, mechanical systems alternatives, loads analysis, renewable energy systems integration and similar design factors/elements throughout the projects life cycle

  • Confidently predict a building’s anticipated energy use and corresponding energy savings, as compared to a standard baseline by applying whole-building energy simulation and verify performance through industry standard calibration procedures for post-occupancy evaluations

  • Provide Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) and Life Cycle Carbon Analysis for design alternatives with a keen understanding of appropriate economic analysis parameters relevant to the project

  • Engage, advance a practice-wide approach in defining, designing and delivering high-performance building design by leveraging energy modeling to demonstrate the value of design leading to higher quality and more efficient buildings. HKS is a signatory to the AIA 2030 Commitment and project level energy analysis is required on all projects thus advancing this objective across the firm is a priority

  • Ability to review professional publications/journals and identify areas of opportunity (innovation) to increase energy efficiency by utilizing new or existing technologies, provide creative market transformation ideas, and/or innovative implementation strategies

  • Facilitate internal training, education and knowledge sharing in regard to building sciences fundamentals and energy analysis software applications

  • Collaborate with design teams to promote integrative sustainable strategies and leverage complex data sets to support design decisions and research

  • Lead and/or assist with specialized research activities including but not limited to energy, environmental, carbon and general sustainability issues

  • Peer-review consultant energy models and supporting documentation for LEED or energy code compliance

  • Represent HKS within industry-relevant committees and organizations, and at conferences and forums

  • Produce graphically engaging technical reports and presentation materials that are communicative

  • Comprehensive knowledge in interpreting and applying high-performance building standards such as ANSI, ASHRAE, IESNA and ASTM as well as building energy codes such as IECC and T24

  • Articulate and comfortable public speaker that is able to lead and/or participate in sustainability charrettes with design teams and clients

  • Able to effectively communicate with architects and/or non-engineers in an inspiring and productive manner

  • Experience in energy auditing and utility analysis, facility benchmarking and energy master planning

  • Familiarity with design and energy modeling applications preferred: Rhino, Grasshopper, Radiance, DIVA, REVIT, AutoCAD, Sketchup, IES VE, Sefaira, Insight360, Energy Plus, EnergyPro a plus

  • A working knowledge of building physics, energy transfer, mechanical design, system control strategies and economics is required

  • Experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, or sustainable design required, Master’s degree preferred

  • 3-5 years’ experience

  • Modeling credentials such as ASHRAE Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP), Building Energy Simulation Analyst (BESA), or equivalent preferred

  • Professional Engineering license a plus

  • LEED AP with specialty required
