What We Want:
The High Performance Research Computing group is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist who will serve as the manager of the Laboratory for Molecular Simulation (LMS) and oversee the daily operations of the LMS, providing training and assisting researchers in the use of computational software, and collaborating on research projects. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Chemistry or related physical science or engineering field and will have three years of experience in computational chemistry and experience developing partnerships and collaborations. Required Education and Experience:
Appropriate PhD
Relevant professional experience in computational chemistry, quantum chemistry, molecular mechanics and visualization
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills
Expertise in the use of the quantum chemistry software: Gaussian, ORCA, NWChem, QUANTUM ESPRESSO, etc
Expertise in the use of molecular mechanics software: NAMD, Gromacs, CHARMM, LAMMPS, etc
Proficient in LINUX/UNIX operating systems and HPC architectures
Linux System Administration Skills
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
Other Requirements or Other Factors:
- Occasionally may be required to work outside of normal working hours and weekends, may require some domestic travel
Preferred Education and Experience:
PhD in chemistry, or related physical science or engineering field
3 years of experience in computational chemistry
Experience in developing partnerships and collaborations
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Familiarity with scientific applications common to research computing environments
Familiarity with popular analysis toolkits such as R, Python frameworks, and Matlab
Familiarity with software management suites such as Anaconda
Familiarity with AI/ML frameworks such as Tensorflow, Pytorch, Kerras, and methods
Familiarity with organizing information and data management services
Familiarity with containers, cloud platforms, kubernetes, and other forward facing HPC technologies
Proficiency with common HPC programming languages, tools, and techniques such as Fortran, C, C++, MPI, OpenMP, and scientific GPU programming
Demonstrated project management and coordination capabilities
Demonstrated ability to write scientific, general purpose, and technical documents
Responsibilities:
LMS Operations - Maintains current versions, access and licenses for LMS software. Maintains documentation for the use of LMS software. Develops standards and oversees the implementation of procedures for efficient software usage and maintenance. Provides support to students, postdocs, and faculty with questions about using LMS software. Provides complex high-performance computing hardware operation and maintenance and operating system maintenance. Assists in the installation/maintenance of LMS software on various operating systems. Aids in the development of ad-hoc programs for customers of LMS high-performance computing resources. Expands the capabilities of the LMS by testing and locating new software and hardware.
Collaboration & Research - Collaborates with faculty, postdocs, and students on individual projects. Initiates collaborative projects with faculty that are not yet using atomistic software. Participates in scientific research proposals for external funding. Supports funded efforts at LMS and HPRC. Presents findings at conferences and through publications in proceedings and professional journals. Pursues external funding opportunities.
Outreach & Training - Participates in mentoring, training, and development of LMS and HPRC users. Develops training and course material. Participates in LMS and HPRC’s community outreach efforts. Performs other duties as assigned.
