At Houston Methodist, the Director Environmental Services position is responsible for the planning, organization, development and direction for the overall operation of Environmental Services, Linen Services, and/or Patient Transportation departments. This position works inter and intra-departmentally to ensure achievement of annual goals and high performance outcomes in support of continuous operations, creating an environment conducive to healing through both the physical appearance and personal experience in staff interaction within Houston Methodist entities. All department functions and operations for the Director Environmental Services must be managed and achieved in accordance with all food and safety, federal, state, and local standards and guidelines in conjunction with regulatory bodies to assure that the highest degree of environmental safety and highest quality patient care is maintained at all times.
The Director position responsibilities include overseeing the activities of the department staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence and efficiency to accomplish strategic and operational objectives. In addition, this position is accountable for employee engagement, adequate staffing levels, budget development and compliance, staffing decisions such as hiring and terminating employment, coaching and counseling employees on work related performance, and developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment. This position also ensures training, monitoring and operations initiatives are implemented which secure compliance with ethical and legal business practices and accreditation/regulatory/government regulations.

Evaluates and responds to patient surveys to ensure appropriate follow-up and corrective action in support of hospital units for collaborative initiatives to ensure best patient and staff service response. (EF)
Conducts regular internal entity surveys for cleanliness; reusable sharps service response; document destruction service quality; and linen service quality to ensure internal department response as well as contracted services are performing to Houston Methodist standards. (EF)
QUALITY/SAFETY - 25%
Ensures a safe and effective working environment; monitors and/or revises the department safety plan and/or any specific accreditation/regulatory required safety guidelines. Responsible for staff maintenance of credentials and competencies, per accrediting/ licensing agency and/or department guidelines as applicable. (EF)
Employs a proactive approach in the optimization of safe outcomes and information systems by monitoring and improving the department workflow and enhancing operations, using peer-to-peer accountability and identifying solutions via collaboration. Implements process improvements utilizing tools such as lean principles. Role models situational awareness, using teachable moments to improve safety. (EF)
Responsible for employee compliance to policies and procedures and performs associated actions upon non-compliance (i.e., licensure/certification compliance, focal point review requirements, disaster plan, in-services, influenza immunization, wage and hour, standard hours, timely termination submission, timely timecard approval, etc.). Maintains entity safety data sheets (SDSs) and SDS database including department audits/updates. (EF)
Participates in entity Safety Committee(s) to ensure proper waste management and Hazaradous Materials management including Pollution Reduction Plan and annual HazMat Response Plan, as appropriate. (EF)
FINANCE - 15%
Develops and manages department operational and capital budgets, approvals, and ongoing maintenance of the department(s), ensuring operation in a cost-effective manner. Proactively identifies and plans for capital needs related to current equipment and future department projects. Ensures staffing plans and schedules meet department needs that reflect understanding of the importance of cost-effectiveness. (EF)
Creates department strategies to achieve financial target and staffing needs, through optimizing productivity, supply/resource efficiency, minimizing incidental overtime and overtime percentage, and other areas according to department specifications. (EF)
Strategizes, develops, and implements supply par levels, ordering, and delivery processes to support linen and cleaning supply efficiencies and cost reduction. (EF)
Manages outsourced services and strategically evaluates and revises services to ensure balance of service needs and cost effectiveness. (EF)

Identifies and implements innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes to improve department, entity or system operations by leading unit projects and/or other department/ system-directed activities. Bachelor's degree required
Master's degree preferred
- Six years of progressively responsible experience in environmental services, three years of which must be in a leadership role
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED
- US Department Of Transportation Hazardous Materials (DOT HazMat) Certification wthin 60 days of hire/transfer
