Position Description

This position may be located in the Houston or Alpharetta (Atlanta) area depending upon the successful candidate. Primary Purpose: Direct / oversee Kinder Morgan's Products Pipeline Business Unit measurement team including skilled engineers and technicians tasked with associated activities covering its liquid pipeline / terminal measurement systems throughout the U.S. and Canada. In this regard, the measurement team serves as the subject matter expert in system design, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting in support of assets operated and maintained by logistics control center and field staff. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as subject matter expert in volumetric measurement.

  • Implement and lead the corporate measurement strategy.

  • Evaluate new and existing pipeline measurement systems.

  • Develop and provide status reports related to measurement performance.

  • Develop tools and conduct statistical analysis to monitor measurement performance and identify anomalies.

  • Provide guidance to operations and maintenance personnel related to measurement testing protocols, equipment certification, system troubleshooting and repairs in compliance with applicable codes, standards and procedures.

  • Receive, investigate, and make recommendations toward the resolution of customer volumetric discrepancy claims.

  • Develop and conduct measurement training for Engineering and pipeline personnel.

  • Serve as company representative in internal and external audits or inspections involving measurement controls.

  • Assure that all recommendations and actions are in compliance with federal, state and local regulations.

  • Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with management, employees, customers and other third-parties.

Position Requirements

Education: Bachelors Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or Civil Engineering or other engineering degree with work experience equivalent to ME, EE, Civil, or Chemical engineering degree Experience/Specific Knowledge - 5+ years practical engineering experience in refining / pipeline / petroleum terminals disciplines - 7+ years in a progressively supervisory / managerial capacity with experience in leading a comparable department consisting of professional / technical staff, preferably in a geographically dispersed setting - 5+ years interpreting and applying engineering principles, theories and concepts related to hydraulics/volumetric flow Certifications/Licenses: Possess and maintain valid driver's license and be insurable by company's insurance carrier Competencies/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to apply engineering principles

  • Analytical problem solver

  • Ability to conduct feasibility studies, determine manpower, cost estimates, and develop engineering criteria

  • Ability to coordinate and manage concurrent or simultaneous projects of various sizes, in various locations and with various completion dates

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office System (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Must be able to setup and manipulate complex Excel spreadsheets

  • Ability to read and effectively communicate orally and in writing in English with co-workers, vendors, customers, contractors, and regulatory officials

  • Must possess and use well-balanced interpersonal skills

  • Ability to cooperatively work with a diverse group in a team environment.

  • Ability to set, track and influence project scope, cost and schedule

  • Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks are essential

  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision and/or direction

  • Must be able to plan, organize and resolve occasional conflicts to accomplish company goals Physical Demands: - Ability to handle stress of meeting deadlines

  • Ability to ascend tank stairs and walk over uneven surfaces on the pipeline right of way or at field facilities Working Conditions: - Essentially indoors, but must be able to work outdoors in project & maintenance activities - Travel 25% - 50% with overnight stays - Must carry a company provided cell phone and be willing and able to respond as requested - Must be willing to occasionally respond after hours and/or on weekends to emergency issues requiring immediate support Supervisory Responsibilities: Must be able to lead the measurement team (both headquarters and field-based), along with managing projects through contractors and others. Preferred (Above the Minimum Requirements) - Demonstrated knowledge of American Petroleum Institute's liquid hydrocarbon measurement standards. - Prefer refining, petroleum pipeline or petroleum terminal engineering experience - Active involvement with and contribution to industry committees or work groups - Certification as a Professional Engineer
