Rice University Associate Director of Development in Houston, Texas

Position Information
Position Summary

Reporting to and working with Executive Director, Moody Center for the Arts, the Associate Director of Development will oversee the major gift fundraising efforts for The Moody and manage a portfolio of major gift prospects targeted at the $50k to $250k+ level. This position will be responsible for executing the fundraising strategy for in conjunction with the director, program chair(s) and/or faculty to include individuals and foundations. This position will work closely and in collaboration with other team members within the Development and Alumni Relations Division serving as the primary liaison, ensuring an open and consistent flow of communication.

Individual major gift fundraising experience primarily at the $50k+ level, Or Two years of professional experience, including 1 year of individual major gift fundraising experience at the $50k+ level PLUS ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: a) one year of successful professional experience in education, nonprofit, or related field b) one year of professional work in marketing or communications

Experience Preferred
  • Experience working in the arts or a related field.

  • Fundraising within a higher education institution, particularly as a development officer.

  • Working within a school and supporting a dean and faculty.

  • Working on a capital campaign.

  • Planned giving or corporate and foundation fundraising.

License/Certification Required

Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years.

  • Strong interpersonal, speaking, and writing skills to interact with prospects, donors, and colleagues in a manner that shows understanding of the needs and interests of others and to work in a collaborative environment.

  • Experience managing non-profit special events.

  • An entrepreneurial, self-starting mindset.

  • A desire to work as part of a collaborative team in a dynamic, start-up environment.

  • Strong general computer skills; proficient with word processing and spreadsheet use.

Internal / External Contacts

Will be in contact with all areas of the campus in person, by telephone, and electronically. Will have extensive contact and occasional travel with the upper-level administrators. Will be in personal contact with a wide range of volunteers, donors, and alumni.

Description of Job Duty
  • Develop, under the guidance of center leadership, the fundraising priorities for the center, along with commensurate goals, objectives, and strategies in support of those priorities.

  • Serve as advisor to the executive director, department heads, chair holders, faculty, and staff regarding fundraising activities.

  • Serve as primary liaison between the Moody Center and the Development and Alumni Relations Division.

  • Manage and implement cultivation/solicitation/stewardship communications and events for the Moody Center including working with the Director of Marketing and Communications to create effective and consistent donor communications (for example electronic newsletters and annual holiday mailings).

Description of Job Duty
  • Maintain a portfolio of major gift prospects through the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors with an emphasis on $50,000+ gifts.

  • Create annual development plan with goals and objectives for the benefit of Rice University in consultation with development leadership, and provide regular progress updates toward those goals.

  • Facilitate the involvement of recommended faculty, staff, and volunteers in major gift solicitations.

  • Partner with development colleagues in support of fundraising initiatives and strategies for major gifts, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, and principal gifts.

  • Travel for the purpose of developing prospect relationships and solicitation of prospects.
