This position is located at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), Patient Administration Division, located at Fort Sam Houston, TX is a modern state-of-the-art, 450-bed health care facility that provides level-one trauma and graduate medical education. The physical appearance and efficiency of space throughout the hospital creates a user-friendly, high quality health care environment for patients, their families and health care providers. Fort Sam Houston is located in San Antonio, the second largest metropolitan area in Texas with a warm climate and close proximity to beaches.

Duties

You will serve as Medical Support Assistant (MSA) for the Patient Administration Division who provides direct assistance to the staff, faculty, leadership and clinical staff in providing services to Soldiers, family members and DoD beneficiaries in coordinating activities with a variety of medical, social service, and legal staff. Performs a variety of administrative, medical support, and clerical tasks related to sensitive and high-risk issues with patient care and treatment within the assigned clinic or Military Treatment Facility (MTF). Provide administrative and medical support that requires the application of extensive guidelines and specialized knowledge, particularly in the provision of the administration of medical records. Perform receptionist/clerical support to include template creation and management for providers. Receives telephone calls and visitors to the service; determines the source of the call or visit; takes messages. Answer questions regarding substantive matters that may require in-depth familiarity of policy as well as regarding cancellation of appointments, clinic hours, and release of information on patients' appointments. Relays messages, considering the nature of incoming patient information and the need for promptly alerting the technical staff. Keeps log of patients seen daily according to military status (i.e., active duty, dependent, retired), and type of appointment (i.e., new patient, follow-up, testing). Has primary responsibility for tracking all referrals for specialty care, ancillary services, and durable medical equipment. Ensure all specialty referrals are appropriately closed with either completed results or appropriate administrative closure. Ensures medical records are maintained in compliance with regulatory/written guidance. Provide information and assistance to Service/Family members on services available. Process all incoming and outgoing mail and distribution. Receives and reviews incoming correspondence.

Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Experience applying an extensive body of rules, procedures and operations such as well-established records, procedures regulations and principles sufficient to analyze medical records, perform quality assurance, compile statistical data, and release medical information; collect and organize data for statistical reports and extract data for statistical and other reports.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade (or equivalent).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
