Courses in ICD-9DM and CPT coding, medical term, human anatomy & physiology
Required minimum experience:
One year ICD-9 coding in a health care setting
CTR certification within 18 months of hire

PERFORMS CASEFINDING FOR REPORTABLE CANCER CASES
Reviews disease indexes, patient records, hospital reports and department logs for reportable cases using state guidelines
ROVIDES COMPLETE ABSTRACT DATA TO TEXAS CANCER REGISTRY
Reviews TDSHS software and hospital data report for multiple primaries, duplicate records and unusual code combinations.
Recognizes and submits pertinent information regarding diagnosis and treatment.
Applies rules for determining disease spread extent at time of diagnosis.
COMMUNICATES WITH OTHER HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AS NEEDED
Works closely with Texas Cancer Registry for continued training, casefinding, reabstracting studies and death clearance.
Contacts physicians, interacts with other departments to clarify and obtain cancer information.
Assists with quality control by alerting HIM coders and clerks of chart inconsistencies or deficiencies.
COMPLIES WITH TEXAS CANCER REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR TIMELY DATA SUBMISSION
Monitors hospital accession register for required monthly submissions
Submits completed abstracts in prescribed media forma
DEMONSTRATES PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
Adheres to the AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) Code of Ethics
Attends professional meetings and seminars related to cancer registry activities
Stays current on new developments in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer for registry purposes
